We’ve always interfered – what’s the difference now?
October 25, 2009
We have consciously interfered with evolution through breeding and habitat management. We even selected our own spouses for millions of years without any noticeable dire consequences.
Well, scientists are no closer to the understanding of living organism than they were a century ago before the term gene appeared. As the leader of the Human Genome Project Craig Venter put it: “We know shit about biology”
(see http://www.btinternet.com/~nlpWESSEX/Documents/GEfantasy.htm).
It does make a difference. Changing the DNA can create a total new organism. Yes, there are advantages but who tells us where to stop?
