“The dull pain in the pit of your stomach spreads like a cancer to your chest and shoulders. As the days pass, every Part of your body begins to ache, to cry out for help. But no help comes. Your body begins to consume itself in a frantic search for energy. First, it burns up its own fat cells. When those are gone, your body uses up its muscle cells, until they, too, are gone. Your legs and arms become little more than skin-covered bones. (…) Finally — perhaps mercifully — your weakened heart stops beating.
That is what it is like to starve to death (…) the poor nations of Africa, Asia, and Latin America, hundreds of millions of hungry people face the threat of starvation every single day.”
