“The worldwide experiment continues”
January 2, 2010
Welcome to year 2010! I hope all of you made it safe and pleasent to this new year that is starting ahead of us. Happy New Year to those who haven’t heard it a million times, yet…
In time for the new year I found the following video on youtube.com, which is acutally more timeless than only for 2010. Nevertheless, I thought it’s a good time to present it to you here:

If you have followed my blog, you have probably noticed that this is a really well-done summary of some aspects I have mentioned so far. An additional very present fact is also presented here: The problem of monopoly. A problem that comes along with genetic modified crops and results in a huge problem in the agricultural industry. As you can see the economic affect is significant. Monsanto is probably a company that you haven’t heard of before although they are one of the the leading mutinational agricultural biotechnology corporations.
Thinking about Genetic Engineering should therefore not just lead us to the immediate affect that might cause “headaches”, it’s also the long-term consequences that should be worried about since they are probably worse because we cannot erase them easily.
Wow I just found your blog and I think it is very good because the topic of genetic and gm food does really interest me. The video was as you said as well quite a good summary of the whole situation but I think that a major point wasn’t too underlined. I mean of course it is a problem which is made worse by lobbyism and the always-wanting-more companies which believe that tomatoes have to be even more red or bigger or ripe at exactly the time when they are needed BUT i also think that if there wasn’t a demand for such goods the industry wouldn’t survive or grow. It is also us, the consumers who cause and support the gm industry. Why do people need to eat fresh raspberries or asparagus throughout the whole year?!?! Or why do consumers always need to have a full fridge and still buy more and more – only because there is another bargain price – and then through lots of moulded food away?
I think it is a very complex problem and every single one of us somehow needs to start changing that the whole big problem can be reversed – hopefully again. Don’t you think so?
Have a good one! Sarah
Yes, I totally agree with you, sarah! It’s us who is so demanding that new products are produced everyday… newer, fancier, more advanced stuff that we don’t really need! But isn’t that the reason why the humans have made such a progress? Why did we NEED electricity if we had candles? It only gave us the possiblility to work longer and therefore harder…
I think it’s just always hard to draw a line between good and bad. There is no way to categorize life like that.
