Want a baby? – Design your own!
October 18, 2009
Let’s imagine that cloning might one day be combined with Genetic Modification to create babies designed to meet the wishes of their parents. People could clone themselves or even lost loved ones from their DNA.
Brilliant or Unethical?
Definitely scary. This is a scenario that I do not want to imagine to become true. Living in a word where you can literally create your baby with whatever eye colour sounds too weird to be reality.
But giving birth to a person that you once lost is completely immoral and there is nothing to justify such a decision (if possible).
What would you as the parents explain to your genetic modified child once it’s older?
“Yea, Maria, you are actually your dead sister Mandy because you are made from her DNA.”
Yes, that sounds unbelievable right now but I doubt that this is impossible. How long does it take that this is going to become usual practice?

Good choice of topic! Not necessarily easy to write about, considering the ethical/moral debate on GE…but it is important to broaden our perspective on this issue, to reflect upon the pros as well as the cons, to consider the advantages as well as the disadvantages of living in a world where genetic engineering is no longer hypothetical…and your blog is the first step into that direction – well done!
